Arthur Christopher Benson
Arthur Christopher Benson 1862-1925 His works include
poetry; novels; essays, notably From a College Window (1902);
critical studies; and biographies of his father and brother Hugh. Arthur
was educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge. His father, Edward
White Benson, was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1883 to his death in 1896.
Severe depression appears to have been a family trait which affected
father and son. A C Benson was a master at Eton College from 1885 to 1903,
and, thereafter, a fellow at Magdalene College, Cambridge. He was a
prolific writer throughout his life, turning out fiction, poetry,
librettos (including the famous song 'Land of Hope and Glory'), essays and
biographies. He was a co-editor of Queen Victoria's letters, and he also
kept a diary, said to contain over four million words. However, only
extracts of the diary have been published. His younger brother, E F
Benson, also became a well-known writer. |
